The trio re-emerged on snowy foothills looking down on a different glittering city. Bunny shivered and stamped his feet. "Did we have to meet somewhere this cold!" He growled at Jack, hushing his complaints and Sandy emerged from the tunnel looking dizzy from the ride, swirls of shaky spirals sun above his head and he sat down on a stump until they cleared.
"Guess you're no snowshoe hare." Jack reached up with his staff and nudged a powder-laden branch, letting the snow cascade down onto Bunnymund's ears.
"FROST!" Bunny growled and sprang to the side, pawing at his ears.
Jack laughed and turned to check on Sandy, who had floated up from the stump and was looking at the horizon.
"Sandy! Jack!" A voice called from the air as Tooth shot into view. She touched down and rested a hand on Sandy's shoulder before turning and hugging Jack. And Bunny! You made it!" She beamed.
"Tooth…" Bunnymund gestured over her shoulder where Tooth's squadron of a half a dozen toothfairies were cooing and nuzzling up against Jack excitedly.
"Girls!" Tooth smiled, using as stern a tone as she could.
Jack grinned as they returned to her side.
"And what do you mean, 'made it?' I don't recall being invited." Bunnymund pouted slightly.
"North said he was gong to come see you in the Warren, did he not tell you?" Tooth rubbed her shoulders against the chill.
"North? In the Warren?" Bunny snorted and arched a thick brow. Just then a spiral of light warped out of thin air beside Bunnymund and he jumped backwards as North appeared from the Warren, via snow globe.
"Bunnymund is not in the Warren so where… Bunny!" North laughed richly. "Where have you been!" he put his hands on his hips.
"I didn't know I was being looked for." Bunnymund shivered and watched as several yetis carrying crates followed North out of the snowglobe portal before it sealed.
"What are those?" Tooth flitted closer to inspect a crate.
Sandy followed her and he smiled, clapping his hands softly.
"Fireworks of course!" North huffed proudly. "We be lighting off our own tonight."
"A bunch of Yetis and explosives, what could go wrong." Bunnymund shook his head and sat on the stump to massage his feet.
"Won't everybody see them?" Jack asked.
"Is that not the point?" North smirked and turned to direct the yetis where to set up shop.
Jack laughed and turned to speak to Tooth but saw she and Sandy had moved away from everyone. Images of conversation flitted above Sandy's head while Tooth spoke in murmurs. Sandy nodded somberly and Tooth gave him a hug, which he returned before they separated. Jack turned quickly so they wouldn't think he was spying and the returned to the others.
A groggy grunt sounded and Phil appeared beside Bunny holding a thermos of steaming cocoa.
"Just what I need, thanks mate." Bunnymund wrapped his paws around the thermos and settled on the stump.
Phil stumped over to Sandy and Tooth and offered them beverages of their own but Sandy turned his down and settled himself a few feet from Bunnymund to await the show.
"Happy New Year, my fellow Guardians!" North called out. "Now!" he called, looking over the city as midnight tolled from a Church bell far away.
Torches lit fuses and the sky went ablaze with the most brilliant fireworks Jack had ever seen. They danced through the night, taking on shapes and designs. No doubt magic had been involved in their assembly, Jack thought, as a fireworks exploded into a flock of rainbow colored birds made entirely of sparks. They flew around until a new firework of giant flowers replaced it. Followed by massive fish, dancing paisley shapes and spiraling planes. It was magnificent.
Jack took a moment to check on the reactions of his fellow guardians; North was ecstatic, brandishing a smoking fire punk like a maestro, commanding different Yetis to light off their rounds at different times. Tooth and her fairies had their smiling faces skyward as they watched the lights chase each other around. Even Bunny was enjoying himself. Jack turned to check on Sandy was happy to see he was smiling, but he seemed distracted. Jack's smile faltered seeing how tired he looked. Did Sandy even want to be here? After everything that had happened tonight?
"Here comes the finale!" North roared over the booms and smoke. Jack looked skywards once more as five separate rockets streaked upwards from different position, spiraling together like a spiral galaxy before exploding. Jack laughed recognizing the symbol of the Guardians, a magnificent 'G' within a pentagon formation with a miniature depiction of each guardian.
The last sparks faded and North whooped loudly, bowing to the applause of the other Guardians and Yetis.
"Fantastic show, North!" Tooth clapped and looked to the Yetis. "You all did great!" The Yetis rumbled and grunted in shy modesty as they packed up their crates once more.
"How did you make those?" Jack grinned at North.
"Jack, isn't the fun in not knowing?" North winked and adjusted his hat. "We must be back to the Pole. Happy New Year!" he waved to the others and said his goodbyes before Phil threw a snowglobe and they passed through the portal back to the Pole.
"It was nice to see you again, Jack." Tooth smiled, flying over. "Have a Happy New Year." She hugged him warmly and Jack smiled. "Always nice to see you too." He nodded as she pulled back and assembled her fairies. "I'll see you again soon." She waved to the others. "Bye, Bunny, bye Sandy."
Sandman waved to her as she flew off and left the three boys on the slopes.
"Well, that was fun." Jack twirled his staff and turned to Bunnymund. "Glad you came."
Bunnymund huffed. "Yes. It was a good show." He peered around Jack to Sandy, who was yawning and looked like he was about to leave. "You gonna be alright, Sandy?" he asked.
Sandy turned and nodded with a half smile and started to float away.
Jack sighed. This just didn't feel fair. So much heart-ache on Sandman's shoulders, and Bunny said he did this so often. He had to make sure he was ok. Jack bent and pawed together a snowball, he blue gently on it and smiled as is glowed frosty-blue.
"Jack what are you—" Bunny started.
"Think fast, Sandy!" Jack through the snowball and it exploded as it hit Sandy in the back of the head.
Bunny slapped his paws over his mouth, eyes wide and ears standing up straight. "Jack!" he scolded. "What did you!!"
Jack watched Sandy as he rubbed the back of his head, but when he turned around slightly, he wasn't smiling.
Jack's smile faltered. Had it not worked?
