My entry for :icontanathe:'s Fan Art Contest: [link]

I had SO much trouble finding a subject for this contest: which was draw fanart of a character in the snow. I tried drawing Ga'Hoole characters, Toothless AND Shade from Kenneth Opal's 'Silver Wing' but in the end yesterday I decided to draw Frightful from 'My Side of the Mountain' by Jean Craighead George. Maybe it had something to do with all the peregrine photos I saw on tumblr the past few days. Anyways. I always loved Frightful, and that book made me want to be a falconer for the longest time. I still have a deep love for raptors and pretty much all birds :D

Frightful's so fluffeh ;)

I love this, he looks adorable! I may have to read this book... It sounds brilliant and your stunning fan-art may have convinced me. ;)
My Dad used to be a falconer and flew peregrines, as well as many many other birds. His favourite tiercel was called 'Jack', everyone said he'd be useless but Dad said he'd have a go at training him and Jack turned into a really fantastic game-hawk. Now I'm a falconer! I started reading books on the subject when I was very small, and started volunteering at a falconry centre when I was 13. I sort of loaned a male harris hawk last year from them, keeping him there but flying him as my own. Unfortunately Milo died and the centre moved last Christmas. I can only go and work occasionally now as it's much further away. I'm picking up a young male harris hawk this year to keep at home with me. Hopefully we'll fly and hunt together for the next 20+ seasons! It'll be four years since I started volunteering on the 7th.
I thought you might like to hear my story since you said you were into falconry... Did you ever get into the sport? :)
